katie gallagher – fall 2011

While the fashion world is trending in a decidedly bohemian direction with dropping hemlines and bursts of bright color and patterns Katie Gallagher has stayed on her own personal course that is decidedly darker but equally nuanced. Katie’s presentation of her Fall 2011 collection was entitled Gris-Gris in reference to a voodoo doll. This was reflected in her models dour and severe looks perfected by her hair and makeup team (Cesar Ramirez and Javier Romero respectively).

Along with her trademark leggings were cropped tailored jackets, skirts of varying lengths and volume and longer dresses with flowing asymmetrical hemlines. The asymmetry could be seen throughout the collection including in the striking voodoo jacket that was a rich gold color that stood out in her predominantly muted palette.

Katie has a very specific aesthetic that is sleek, tailored and sits on an edge but there is enough sophistication that it never becomes gimmicky or a caricature of itself. While each look she presented was dramatic and in general monochromatic, you could easily find individual pieces within that could be styled to fit in many wardrobes. I have been impressed with her work since she first showed a few seasons back and I look forward to seeing how she develops.
