What are you currently up to?
I just took part in the Blueprint show during the Audi Fashion Festival in Singapore. It is an international trade show featuring designers from Singapore and the rest of the world. It was a crazy whirlwind as I also had a fashion show for the press and buyers on the opening day of Blueprint! Right after the show I was back in New York, then headed to China and Hong Kong to meet with potential buyers. Now I’m back in Singapore again and trying to work my way slowly into a couple more stores, and praying that money falls from the sky!!
Do you currently sell your collection somewhere ?
At the moment, I’m selling a couple of items at Patricia Field in New York, and will soon be stocked in Hong Kong and Australia. All my items will also be available for pre-orders on my own website in a couple of weeks! I am a young designer and my label is technically less than 4 months old. So I don’t want to rush too much into producing too many items that I can’t sell. Fashion is a fickle industry – one day you’re in, the next day you’re out; I want to take things slow and make sure I know what I am doing and am able to control the situation.
Are you planning on showing next NYFW?
Not really, but I am hoping to have a presentation during the Paris or Seoul fashion week. After almost 4 years in New York and attending quite a few fashion shows there, I feel my designs just won’t really do well in America. Many times, even at school, I felt misunderstood. I don’t really know how to do that chic american sportswear or dark grungy androgynous look that many new yorkers seem to favour. But one day in a few years when I’ve matured a little more, I will give it a shot and return to test myself!
Who are 3 artists/designers who inspire you?
well i kind of consider Rei Kawakubo and Junya Watanabe my two favourite designers/artists/3D geniuses…
and someone I really am in awe of from long ago, is Leonardo da Vinci. not just his paintings but he invented so many interesting things – I once read a book on his journals and his study of the human form and anatomy; his research and inventions with regards to engineering – he’s pretty darn incredible.
Where do you hope to be in 3 years ?
Ideally, I’ll be sitting happy in a little store of my own! My dream is to have a shop with my studio in the back and a little chill-out area in the front. I also hope to be a little more financially secure by then – it takes a heck lot of commitment and money to show and then produce a collection. I think any fashion designer who lasts more than 3 years with 6 collections, really should pat themselves on the back!
