Recently I attended a reception at EVA NY for Stone Morris. Created by Roz Morris who has a background in the arts, Stone Morris is fine art transmuted into fashion. The designer’s sculpture, photography and installation pieces merge with every aspect of each clothing collection, blurring the line between the two.
I have a love/hate relationship with prints. I’ve been excited seeing them more frequently on the runway and even on the streets among the black clad New Yorkers. But it’s tricky to find prints that don’t make it look like you’re trying to hard to be “phresh” (think Jeremy Scott) or are too girlie (Liberty prints, anyone??!?)
So I was pleasantly surprised to encounter a rack of prints that hit the sweet spot of my personal aesthetics. Beautifully made in organic cotton, twill and silk the prints are created from photographs taken in Africa as well as from Roz’s sculptures.
Another major trend I’m in love with (and I have no shame loving trends!) is the images of animals that began with Givenchy and the Rottweiler and have made Kenzo’s Tiger sweater a sold out item despite being the most hideous kelly green imaginable. This silk leopard top is a way to have a bit more originality in your wildlife friendly wear. And it’s not going anywhere when the trend leaves the building. It’s beyond it!
Roz has Southern roots and this informs her artwork as well. This multimedia piece is inspired by the Southern Gothic culture –and as someone who suffered through four long years of living in the South I think she captured it brilliantly.
She photographs her artwork to create prints to use in her collection. This silk crepe de chine windbreaker is one of my favorite pieces and the print was created from photos of the wax sculpture below.
So if like me, you’ve been waiting for the right prints to come along to incorporate into your all black wardrobe then Stone Morris might have exactly what you’re looking for.
