Make Love, not War! A mid-week jewelry giveaway with Efva Attling

Hey kids, this is the first of what I hope is an ongoing event: giveaways of items that I truly love and think you will too.

If you remember a few weeks ago I featured the Sans Peur ring by Efva Attling. A piece of jewelry that I now wear daily! Efva is all about Beauty with a thought. The former Vogue model and Swedish pop star knows that a beautiful object infused with meaning is made more special. She hopes that you’ll expand on this idea to create your own narrative when you wear her pieces. I’m giving away this necklace MAKE LOVE NOT WAR TAGS. A unisex design, it’s two stamped silver dog tags that read “Make Love Not War” in braille on ballchain.

Efva’s thought: A message of love written in embossed printing. The contrast of the hard element of military badges with peaceful message. Blind for the seeing. Humour mixed with seriousness.

You can see more of her jewelry online or in NYC at her new store in the meatpacking district. For a chance to win this necklace do any of the following (more than one = more than one entry!):

How easy is that? Good luck! Contest through Saturday and winner announced Sunday!

MyWardrobe.com is a great find for fashionable winter wear online

Big cities have always led the way when it comes to fashion and style, and things are no different this season. So, you may wonder what sorts of fashion are hot this fall and winter in a place like New York City. Well, this season it’s all about classy ways to stay warm. You may be familiar with simply throwing on whatever old jacket or sweatshirt you have lying around in order to keep up with the dropping temperatures. However, there are actually a lot of options when it comes to high-end fashion designers and warm outerwear. If you look into fashion in a city like New York, you’ll see that there are plenty of people wearing such outerwear from popular designers such as Burberry.

Using Burberry as an example designer, the fall fashion collection includes a number of different coats that are both classy and warm. For example, trench coats and pea coats (generally in dark colours such as blacks, greys and browns) are very popular this season, and there are a number of them available for your purchase. Additionally, there are a number of different scarves in this collection, which can contribute to keeping you warm and stylish. Scarves seem to be on a constant rise in popularity, and many large cities in colder areas are full of men wearing scarves. Items like these can greatly assist you in fixing yourself up with an appropriate big city wardrobe.

Assembly New York

Where: 170 Ludlow Street, NY, NY
When: 12 pm – 9 pm daily
http://assemblynewyork.com

Assembly New York would be a great place to to get stuck if Hurricane Irene ever decided she missed the city and wanted to return. Along with an impeccably curated collection of vintage and designer duds, the narrow dim lit space is cluttered with eclectic treasures picked by Greg Armas’ keen eye. In a short three years of business, Assembly has gained a cult following from the fashion flock and fashion creators, leading to collaborations with designers including Mary Meyers, Makr Carry Goods, and Neji Commu. For 2009 New Years, Assembly asked NY design group Confetti Systems to interpret the changing of time with referential Mexican piñata forms and Mylar. That pretty much sums up the essence of the store.

PIPS

Where: 158 Roebling Street, between Grand & Metropolitan Ave
When: everyday 6 pm – midnight

In general our SDNYC “finds” are retail, but sometimes an exception has to be made. Such is the case for PIPS a brand new Williamsburg joint that is all about table tennis (aka as ping-pong to regular plebes like me) PIPS, which opened in early July 2011 feels more like your best friend’s basement rec room than anything else. It has two tables, music, art and posters on the walls and a bar that serves beer and wine. The sickest thing about this place is that it’s all pay what you like. Yes, I’m serious. During a recession how brilliant is that? So I know that when you go you will be generous for your Karma’s sake. And because your mom raised you to do the right thing.

Pimps & PinUps Salon

Where: 108 Stanton St, Lower East Side
Pimps & Pinups
This is where I get a bit of blue added to my hair. While they definitely have a retro look/feel to the salon the staff is utterly up-to-date, friendly and with the mad skills to refine your style. Looking to get that funky retro hairstyle a la Amy Winehouse? Check out the new British transplant Pimps and Pinups, run by Australian cousins whose doppelganger salon is in London’s East End. The slick black space, complete with luxurious lighting and dressing room mirrors, will make you feel like some kind of hipster ’50s movie star. Come for straightening, cuts, color or styling, and nab products from companies like Sweet Georgia Brown and Redken.

Christopher Lee Sauve

Where: Online only at http://www.christopherleesauve.com/

New York-based artist fashion impresario CHRISTOPHER LEE SAUVÉ is a momma’s boy. Whether he’s drawing inspiration from punk nuevo Brooklyn street kids, or his idol Andy Warhol, this Canadian-born designer always looks back to his mother for inspiration. “When I was a child, in the early 80’s, she would create her own over-sized, silk-screened, bold-graphic t-shirts,” recalls the artist from his Brooklyn studio, “she would cut and rip the neck and wear them as elegant evening dresses. It was revolutionary.”

Not content to wallow in her shadow, SAUVÉ recently burst onto the cultural landscape with his own line of t-shirts that have become controversial collector’s items after being embraced by THE NEW YORK TIMES, NEW YORK MAGAZINE, VOGUE, ELLE, PAPER MAGAZINE and PEREZ HILTON.

His current popularity began when rumors began to circulate the bloggosphere that ANNA WINTOUR was being replaced as editor of VOGUE. The now iconic t-shirt he created simply read: SAVE ANNA.

Currently, he is busy on a collection of hand painted t-shirts for his label CHRISTOPHER LEE SAUVÉ and his t-shirt collection is available at select retail stores in New York, Tokyo, London, Germany, Italy, France, Japan, and Seoul.

Any Old Iron

Where: 149 Orchard St, LES NY
Sunday- Wednesday 12pm -7pm, Thursday -Saturday 12pm -8pm
Any Old Iron

From across the pond and to Lower Manhattan, a music inspired menswear shop ‘Any Old Iron’ can be found in one of my favorite ‘hoods – The Lower East Side!  Any Old Iron  specializes in selling rare and UK-specific menswear . The majority of the collections featured are exclusive to Any Old Iron and include labels like; Sir Tom Baker’s rock and roll suiting, Bolongaro Trevor’s moody-mod inspired menswear and Child of the Jago from collaborative designers Barnzley, and Joe Corre (Son of Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren). The shop also sells exciting and edgy contemporary labels as Fred Perry, Fred Perry Raf Simons, Electronic Poet, B-Store, Unconditional, London Undercover, S***R shoes, and Red Mutha.

Any Old Iron is the brainchild of designer/stylist, Andrew Clancey and arts-entrepreneur, Christopher Melton. The shop’s name is rooted in the olden cry of a scrap man collecting metal with his horse and cart, and also hearkens to Clancey’s family scrap metal business which was founded in 1872. “Any Old Iron,” is also an Old English music hall song which references a young man’s sartorial dandyism – a quality that is distinctly English, and, ever-present in the shop’s design and the legion of British designers featured. In addition to exclusive collections, rare and sought-after antiques are also be for sale.

Allan & Suzi

Where: 237 Centre Street between Broome & Grand
Mon-Sat 12pm-7pm; Sun 12pm-6pm

For 16 years, Allan Pollack and Suzi Kandel have been the first name in the retro-clothing business. Originally on the Upper West Side they re-located downtown in Spring 2011. This store is a true fashion lovers dream and a true vintage store. You won’t find flannel shirts or cut off jean shorts or anything that’s old masquerading as vintage. Instead look at Versace gowns, Kelly bags and Lanvin platforms. I’ve read reviews that Allan can be “cranky”. I personally found both Allan and Suzi to be utterly delightful and can only imagine that any “crankiness” was the result of someone not handling the garments properly. While it’s not cheap, don’t be afraid of the price tags. They’ll let you know that many things are 70% or more off of the price listed. So if you find something you love maybe you can find a price that will match.
