NYFW Day Zero

Although NYFW doesn’t officially start at MILK or Lincoln Center until tomorrow, there were plenty of events and shows today. My theory is that people know by this time next week we’re all exhausted so they’re trying to get us while we’re fresh! Vince is one of my amazing assistants this season, and while we were out and about it was pointed out that his sweater happened to match my hair. Coincidence?!? We’re not saying, but I thought I’d post this as the photo for today. Check back soon for coverage from shows from today including DEGEN, Veda, Timothy K and more! xx

Faux fur vest and rings & things -what i’m wearing now

I’ve never been a fan of faux fur (leopard the exception) but last fall picked this vest up. Yes it’s faux, but it’s fun and I can wear it around my dog without pangs of guilt! Since it’s a little dramatic I tend to keep everything else simple.

…and keeping it simple allows me to add more accessories. From the left I’m wearing a “bone” bracelet by Iosselliani, ring by Bond Hardware, skull ring by Made Her Think, rings by Bond Hardware, big ring –i don’t know, Sans Peur ring by Efva Attling, silver wire bracelet by some guy on the street. Necklace by Sorrelli + extra chains added in by me.

Damir Doma for a grey day

A while back I mentioned wanting to steal the style of one of my favorite musical groups, The Black Soft. Consider this look as being inspired by them! Having been disappointed recently at my options for simple tops for women I decided to look at some men’s clothing lines and have not been disappointed. This tunic/top is from the Damir Doma men’s collection. While they sell women’s clothing as well, I really responded to the cut and drape of this top and for me the versatility. It can work with leggings now or like a dress in the summer. Also wearing my Linda Farrow x Dries Van Noten sunglasses which really have become part of my winter uniform and work so well with the blue in my hair. (and a shout out to Shannon at Pimps & Pinups who is responsible for adding this color in my life. She is seriously the best!)

Colleen Nika talks fashion + music and who to hear in 2012

Colleen Nika photographed by RANKIN

I want to introduce you to Colleen Nika. Colleen and I were first “facebook friends” before meeting in real life at the after party for Beady Eye at Norwood. I immediately fell in love with her Frank Tell dress and shortly after that with her acerbic wit and sly observations. She is a woman who loves fashion but has a passion for music. As the fashion editor at Rolling Stone she’s created the must-read  daily column, Thread Count, in which she explores the relationship of style and music. Not only that, the girl DJs, makes her own music and runs Nightvision, a platform she launched to introduce nonconformist international sounds to new audiences. Here she answers my questions about fashion + music and who we should be paying attention to in 2012!

What inspired Thread Count?
It was born out of a need to prove that the interplay between fashion and music is more relevant than ever and that there should be an editorial platform dedicated entirely to exploring and chronicling that relationship. And I pilot that ship.

Courtney Love

Is there a decade or period that you think was particularly amazing in terms of the intersection of music and fashion?
Yes, the ’90s, and it was so unscripted and untainted by forced collaborations and celebrity-helmed lines. I’m a big subscriber to the heroin chic aesthetic, which I know isn’t PC, but elegant decay fascinates me. My musical tastes are built on that dichotomy, too, so it fits. The ’90s seemed more or less built on the juxtapositions of glamour and destruction, and the styles of Shirley Manson, Kim Gordon, PJ Harvey and Courtney Love became fuel to fashion’s fire.
Kate Moss and her fragile model ilk were the runway versions of that ideal, that high glamour, low life tension. That was the birth of luxe grunge. I also adore the technophilic rave styles from the era; there’s obviously a huge resurgence of that now and I’m trying to pinpoint why that is. It’s more than nostalgia; it’s trying to rebuild the idea of a future, so tech fabrics and electric hues convey that well.

HURTS

What was your favorite fashion/music moment of 2011?
Seeing HURTS, the most attractive, dramatic, and well-dressed band in music, play at Mulberry’s party in London. It was a moment of aesthetic bliss. They looked and sounded so good, and for a sublime hour, that’s all that mattered.

Grimes

Grimes

What current artists do you think have the most interesting fashion sense?
Nic Endo Fever Ray, Phlo Finister, Shirley Manson, Bjork, Nicola Roberts, Grimes and HURTS.

Musically who do you listen to at the moment?
I’m always working on mixes, so that. Aside from that, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo score (as a combined visual and sound, the most grotesquely stylish aesthetic experience of the year–right up my alley). Trent Reznor is a core influence for me and the perfect synthesis of pop and uncomfortable extremes. I also love the Baader Meinhof Komplex score and other works by Vangelis, Jarre, Clint Mantsell, and Cliff Martinez. Artists on heavy recent rotation: Biosphere, Prurient, Araabmuzik, Zomby, Jon Brooks, November Novelet, Drexciya, Tropic of Cancer, and Regis.

What inspires you about NYC?
I honestly consider myself internationally-oriented but I love being able to walk everywhere here and always find something new while being around the corner from familiar comfort. And there’s still some oddities to be enjoyed amidst the over-commodification. I’m here to help accentuate those aspects.

On my way out in Giuseppe Zanotti shoes

Can I tell you how obsessed I am with these platforms? Yes they are insanely high/Lady Gaga worthy/impractical. But sometimes life calls for a little madcap adventure…and we really ought to dress the part!
Katya_Moorman_AlexanderMcQueenClutchAnd an Alexander McQueen clutch is the only bag I have that can compete with the shoes.A simple black velvet coat over a little black dress completes the look…

Comme des Garcons + Alexander McQueen = what I’m wearing now

What the hell am I going to wear to holiday events?
Maybe this dress by Comme des Garcons that was constructed with extremely faux fur that looks like a worn out stuffed animal… Such decisions can drive a person mad…

Even though my dog Nasdaq was convinced that his Tiger was used in this dress here is proof that Tiger is “alive” and well…shoes by Alexander McQueen…

My new old skull dress

Yes, it’s the Sunday “what i’m wearing now” post. I was shopping my closet for something to wear this week: for the GMHC Fashion Forward event as well as for the Raise Cache event and came across my skull dress –or more like tunic at this point. Originally I had a black cotton dress from TopShop that had gotten kind of ratty and the only thing I liked on it were the skulls made from sequins. So I gave it to my friend (and recent grad from RISD in fashion design) Scott Edward Stevenson to see if he could make anything from it. The result was this very pretty top I’m wearing. I paired it with a similarly sequined skirt, full length gloves (which actually work with this better colorwise than it looks like in the photo) and my Camille Zarsky clutch.  All in all this is way better than the original –and it’s one of a kind!

Detail of the sequined skull that Scott was able to save and incorporate into his design!

What I’m Wearing Now -in bits & pieces

Today I wasn’t feeling particularly photogenic so decided to splice up my image. Basically it’s all about the motorcycle jacket.  This jacket is ancient and I’ve had it since I found it on the floor of a warehouse loft that I used to hang out in with “punk” boys in highschool. It’s miles too big on me and every year I say I’m going to get rid of it, but it’s really too crappy to even give to charity and it’s a perfect shield from the world on days like today.

I also want to point out the “magnetic” nail polish by Nails INC. that I picked up at Sephora. Still on the fence about it: whether it’s cool or looks like tie-dye in greyscale!

Without Fear – What I’m Wearing Now

Lately it feels as though the entire world is stressed: which is probably not far from the truth! Every other day it seems as if another country’s economic system is threatening to collapse, a natural disaster or planned violence strikes and one more poll says that people are feeling pessimistic about the future. (the last one makes me kind of want to say: really? You needed a poll to tell you that?) So when I went to Efva Attling’s boutique opening a few weeks ago the piece that struck a chord for me the most was this ring shown above. It’s large, heavy silver with SANS PEUR imperfectly engraved onto it. “Sans peur” means “without fear” in french and I felt like it was exactly the kind of reminder I needed right now: to live without fear regardless of everything I can’t control around me right now. I’ll be doing a photoshoot with the ring for Efva and will post it on the blog as well as eventually doing a giveaway of the ring –which is the only one that was made so truly an original!
