My new old skull dress

Yes, it’s the Sunday “what i’m wearing now” post. I was shopping my closet for something to wear this week: for the GMHC Fashion Forward event as well as for the Raise Cache event and came across my skull dress –or more like tunic at this point. Originally I had a black cotton dress from TopShop that had gotten kind of ratty and the only thing I liked on it were the skulls made from sequins. So I gave it to my friend (and recent grad from RISD in fashion design) Scott Edward Stevenson to see if he could make anything from it. The result was this very pretty top I’m wearing. I paired it with a similarly sequined skirt, full length gloves (which actually work with this better colorwise than it looks like in the photo) and my Camille Zarsky clutch.  All in all this is way better than the original –and it’s one of a kind!

Detail of the sequined skull that Scott was able to save and incorporate into his design!

What I’m Wearing Now -in bits & pieces

Today I wasn’t feeling particularly photogenic so decided to splice up my image. Basically it’s all about the motorcycle jacket.  This jacket is ancient and I’ve had it since I found it on the floor of a warehouse loft that I used to hang out in with “punk” boys in highschool. It’s miles too big on me and every year I say I’m going to get rid of it, but it’s really too crappy to even give to charity and it’s a perfect shield from the world on days like today.

I also want to point out the “magnetic” nail polish by Nails INC. that I picked up at Sephora. Still on the fence about it: whether it’s cool or looks like tie-dye in greyscale!

Without Fear – What I’m Wearing Now

Lately it feels as though the entire world is stressed: which is probably not far from the truth! Every other day it seems as if another country’s economic system is threatening to collapse, a natural disaster or planned violence strikes and one more poll says that people are feeling pessimistic about the future. (the last one makes me kind of want to say: really? You needed a poll to tell you that?) So when I went to Efva Attling’s boutique opening a few weeks ago the piece that struck a chord for me the most was this ring shown above. It’s large, heavy silver with SANS PEUR imperfectly engraved onto it. “Sans peur” means “without fear” in french and I felt like it was exactly the kind of reminder I needed right now: to live without fear regardless of everything I can’t control around me right now. I’ll be doing a photoshoot with the ring for Efva and will post it on the blog as well as eventually doing a giveaway of the ring –which is the only one that was made so truly an original!

J Brand highwaisted jeans & Diana Orving top – What I’m Wearing Now

I have not always been a fan of high waisted jeans. In fact, I’d say I’ve been the exact opposite: they always made me think of the dreaded “mom jeans” and seemed terribly ass flattening. (and trust me I have a flat enough ass as it is!) But ever since Marc Jacobs showed his colorful satin high waisted pants styled a la Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver, I’ve been intrigued. So a few weeks ago I let me friend Beth, who owns a boutique, bring me a pair to check out: the “Bette” jean from J Brand. My first thought was that they were too much an exact replicate of something from the ’70s with their patch pockets in front, than a modern reinterpretation. But I tried them on and realized they’re really soft and comfortable and it was really nice to have a different silhouette –so I decided to keep them and I’m sure they’re going to be a major summer into fall staple!

I paired them with a cropped top by Diana Orving that I picked up at Opening Ceremony awhile back. I love the asymmetry in the hem of the top and how it’s more revealing in back then in front. And worn with the higher jean there’s no fear of the dreaded muffin top! Also wearing my favorite straw summer hat to protect myself from the sun, gold earrings that I’ve permanently borrowed from my mom and super comfortable “Lively” shoes by Nicole –on sale now at Piperlime!

Self Portrait Sunday

I am IN LOVE with my new Diane von Furstenberg jacket. It’s silk and covered with fabric roses that are all hand made and is a great boxy cut. What really makes it work for me is that some of the roses are shiny black almost like vinyl and the edges are cut raw with pinking shears – the combination of those 2 details keeps it from being merely floral and gives it more visual interest. I plan on keeping this for life! Also I decided to really blow out the exposure in the photos so you can see the details…I’m so pale that my hair gets lost in the first photo but oh well!
Also wearing: D&G shades (always lately), Seven for all Mankind shoes and vintage Blue Cult jeans.

self portrait sundays

me_naz

this is me with my dog naz –technically named nasdaq (yes, after the stock market!) I’m in love with these boots. They have studs on the inside and can completely fold down, be worn 1/2 & 1/2 (like here) or all the way up. Happy Sunday everyone. Enjoy it…the work week has not yet begun.

Black Jumpsuit! -What I’m Wearing Now

Katya-Moorman

So my intention was to post a self portrait tonight…but I didn’t take one today and realize all of the ones I have are sadly out of date. So just putting up this photo because…i like it–and at least it’s a full length photo. The black jumpsuit I’m wearing is by Kevin Johnn Brill (who was on Season 1 of Project Runway) and the necklace is from the Fenton/Fallon collection at J Crew. …and the ridiculously long toes are from Mom.

Outtake: photoshoot with Dean Modah

deanModah

This isn’t actually an outtake since I’ll probably use this photo, BUT to keep my life a little more sane I’m making the blog a little more exciting. (or at least I hope you’ll see it that way!) While I’ll still be doing street style, I’m also going to add in some other photos that I take- Saturdays will be random: from a recent photoshoot –like the one above– to the view from my window. On Sundays I’m going to do self-portraits – for awhile anyways, and I’ll be adding in more interviews with artist or designers. They’ll be short though and they will all have amazing style! So stay tuned!
ps the rest of the photos from my shoot with Dean will be on my photography website, StyleDefined NYC soon.
