While you’re waiting for your Marc Jacobs invitation…

Fashion week is almost upon us and New York fashion lovers are comparing invitations like 7th graders comparing cards on Valentine’s day. Who got invited where and to how many shows. But what if you love fashion but aren’t in a position to get the invites you covet? I would like to suggest looking at emerging designers. Ones that I personally love are featured in our new UP|coming section that is all about newer/lesser known designers and is something I’m really excited to be sharing: Ann Yee, Jennifer Chun and Alexa Galler will all be showing at the GenArt Fresh Faces in Fashion show while Dawn Han and Marianna Barksdale have solo shows in the works.

And here are a few other places to see upcoming talent this NYFW. (Note: some of these are invite-only so you’ll need to request invites from the appropriate contacts on their sites)

GenArt Fresh Faces in Fashion Show: What do Zac Posen, Rebecca Taylor and Philip Lim have in common? They all showed at GenArt early in their careers. The show is September 9th at 7 pm and you can buy tickets for the show -which includes an after party- on their website.

Emerge! Fashion Runway Show: Created and produced by D. Williams Public Relations Group, Emerge! takes place bi-annually during NY Fashion week. Each season the Emerge! fashion council chooses the top 4 designers in a rigorous selection process, who present their designs during Emerge! and center stage during NY Fashion week.

During the event, the Fashion Innovator Award is presented each season honoring a legendary individual who has made a difference in the NY Fashion industry. This year the show will be held on September 13th.

Nolcha Fashion Week: is an award winning fashion week event now in its 5th year held simultaneously with New York Fashion Week consisting of four days of runway shows, eco-accessory exhibition, fashion business seminars, and networking events. They  showcase  top-tier designers, a globally-minded and diverse group originating from countries that include Italy, Brazil, United Kingdom, Venezuela, South Korea, Russia, Sweden, Colombia, USA, China, Dominican Republic, among others.

The Green Shows:  is dedicated to the design, and development of the next generation of specialty retail destinations to service a growing global market of socially conscious fashion shoppers. An international community of ethical fashion designers and collectives are producing with passion, style, and integrity. Samantha Pleet and Study NY are a few of the labels/designers who have worked with The Green Shows.

Williamsburg Fashion Weekend: If like fashion but find the Manhattan crowd cringe-worthy then maybe this is the event for you. Held after fashion week has officially ended (Sept 16th & 17th) this show has a focus on the really new designer.

From their site: WFW provides a platform for young and emerging fashion designers who push the boundaries of design, presentation, production, ultimately re-evaluating the fashion industry as a whole. Past participants have shown us there are many creative ways to be ‘green’ through recouturing, upcycling, recycling, eco-friendliness, transparent business practices, and artisan techniques.  Shows run the gamut from fashion as conceptual art to ready-to-wear and incorporate live music, theater, and dance. The shows are always raw, experimental and forward thinking.

I hope this helps and let me know if I missed anything!
